At St Joseph’s, we teach phonics every day in the Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1. We use Letters and Sounds supported by phonics play (for example, Jolly Phonics actions). In Year R our phonic skills begin with speaking and listening. We practice listening for sounds at the beginning, in the middle, and at the end of words. We also practice blending sounds together verbally to make words. Through using Letters and Sounds the children learn the sound, an action and the formation of each letter. As the children become more confident, we teach them how to put sounds together to read and write words. The children also practice high frequency words such as ‘we’ and ‘was’ at both home and school.
In Key Stage 1, the children continue to follow the Letters and Sounds scheme enhanced with further materials and give the children weekly spellings. The children use card games, interactive whiteboard materials, flash cards and white boards to support their learning.
