David Barrett

David Barrett – Chair of the Governing Body The Chair of Governors leads the Governing Body and is elected by the Governing Body from within its membership.David Barrett has been a Foundation Governor appointed by the Diocese of Arundel and Brighton since November 2012.  He played a key role in the recent school expansion project. David has no business interests connected to St Joseph’s and is not a Governor at any other school. His wife works at the school as a Teaching Assistant and they have 3 children, with two currently attending St Joseph’s and the eldest at St Peters. He is a Director of an Engineering Consultancy and holds business qualifications; an MBA and BSc Hons. David is passionate that children should get the best start to their education possible and that St Joseph’s continues to improve how this is achieved.

Pauline Searle

The Local Authority Governor is appointed by the Local Authority. I am an old pupil of St Joseph’s when it was in Guildford Town Centre, next to the Old St Joseph’s Church. My three children Matthew, Louise and Luke all attended St Joseph’s School. I was a childminder for 25 years before I became a Guildford Borough Councillor in 1999 for Stoughton. I was elected in 2005 as Surrey County Councillor for Guildford North. I have been a Governor at St Joseph’s School for about 14 years. I help run a holiday play scheme for 14 years , my interests have always been children and family orientated, this is reflected on the Charities I am involved with I am a Trustee of Disability Challengers, and a Patron of Home Start, and the Committee I have been a member of at Surrey County Council , Children and Families, Children and Adult Social Care and Health Scrutiny. I am also a Governor at Christ College. Pauline has no business interests with St Joseph's.

Kate Carter

Kate Carter is a Foundation Governor at St Joseph's.  She lives in Guildford and has been Deputy Headteacher at St Thomas of Canterbury Catholic Primary School since September 2014, having taught in the school since September 2008. Kate has taught in Catholic schools since 1996 in Surrey and Kingston.  She is committed to Catholic Education and feels privileged to be able to serve as a Governor at St Joseph's. Kate is married, her eldest daughter attends St Peter’s and her younger daughter and son attend St Thomas'.   Kate is a member of the Parish of Guildford and attends Mass at St Pius X.  Kate has no business interests connected to St. Joseph's.  She is the Staff Governor at St Thomas of Canterbury.

Dave Mitchell

Dave Mitchell – Parent Governor Parent Governors are selected by election (or appointment if insufficient people stand for election) and drawn from parents and carers of children at the school. I joined the Governing body of St Joseph’s in September 2015 having been elected as a Parent Governor; my term runs until September 2019. I currently have 1 of my 3 children at the school with my eldest 2 having also attended St Joseph's and are now at secondary school. As a family we worship at St Mary's and I am currently going through the RCIA programme with the Guildford Catholic Churches. I work locally within the public sector in a management role. Dave has no business interests with St Josephs school.  

Zelma Braganza

Zelma Braganza was appointed, by the Diocese of Arundel and Brighton, as a Foundation Governor in April 2018. She has had a career in education, in both the maintained and independent sectors, and has held senior leadership roles, including headship of two schools with students aged 3-18. She is a member of the Independent Schools Inspectorate and a panel member for the Surrey Schools Appeals Service. She lives in Guildford and is a member of the Catholic Parish of Guildford. She has no business interests at St Joseph’s School.  

Simon Fraser

Simon Fraser – Vice Chair The Vice Chair takes on a leadership role of the Governing Body in the Chair’s absence and is elected by the Governing Body from within its membership. I joined the St Joseph’s governing body as a Foundation Governor in September 2014, and both daughter and Son attended St Josephs.  In my role as Foundation governor I am a member of the Buildings, Finance and Health & Safety committee and also the Outreach committee. I work in the financial sector, and for the last eight years I have worked on the actuarial consulting side for a global IT organisation supporting and leading the deployment of specialist IT solutions for life insurance companies in the UK and Europe. When family life and working commitments allow the time I enjoy watching all levels of rugby union and supporting England rugby. Simon has no business interests at St Joseph’s school.

Michael Calnan

Mr Michael Calnan – Head of School I was appointed to the post of Deputy Headteacher at St Joseph’s in April 2002 following a career in education spanning all phases. More recently, I was appointed of Head of School in September 2017, a post which I feel both proud and privileged to hold. I do not live locally, but in the London borough of Merton, south west London, where I attend St John Fisher church and am a minister of the Word (I read at mass). I am married to a now retired teacher and three of our four children have followed us into the profession. My service to this school is one of devotion and dedication, as I believe earnestly in the school, its pupils, parents, staff and the whole community that it has become. I have no business interests in St Joseph’s School.    

Mr Tom Collins

Tom Collins, Deputy Head Teacher (Advisor) I joined St Joseph's in 2013, after working in two local primary schools, becoming Deputy Head of School here in 2017.  I was a pupil at St Joseph's myself, many years ago, and so feel passionately about its heritage and future.  I have spent much of my career championing mathematics within schools; most recently developing the Teaching for Mastery approach after a research trip to Shanghai.  My wife and I can usually be found at the 11am Mass at St Mary's, with our two young children.  

Aleksandra Pacey

I was appointed as a foundation Governor at St Joseph's School in September 2016. Me and my husband Tim moved to Guildford 8 years ago and our daughter Daria attends the School. We are members of St Nary's church and I am working in the private sector as an accounts assistant. Aleksandra has no business interests in St Joseph's School.  

Rosie Baranowicz

Staff Governors are selected by election from teaching and support staff paid to work at the school, except the Headteacher who sits on the Governing body because of their position in the school. I have been the Staff Governor at St Joseph's Catholic Primary School since September 2018. I am in my 9th year of teaching at St Joseph's after training at St Mary's University. Having grown up locally I know the school well and it is a privilege to work and support our kind and caring community. I am not a governor at any other school and I have no business interests at St Joseph's school.

Jonathan Cornell

I joined the Governing body of St Joseph’s in March 2017 as a Parent Governor, my term runs until March 2021. I am married with 2 children both of whom attend St Joseph's. I currently work as a regulator in financial services. I am not a Governor at any other schools. Jonathan has no business interests with St Josephs School.

Ms Jill Keany

Ms Jill Keany – Executive Head Teacher Jill was appointed Executive Head Teacher on 1st September 2017. Jill has no business interests at St Joseph’s school.  

Alex Waters

I joined the Governing body of St Joseph’s in November 2018. I have two children, with my eldest having joined the school from the nursery in September 2018.  I work at the Department for Education setting policy and strategy across all stages of education including schools. I have no business interests with St Joseph’s school.

Tim Edwards (Previous Governor)

I was appointed as a Foundation Governor at St. Joseph's School in 2005, since when I have been chair of the Finance, Buildings and Health and Safety Committee. I am a qualified Chartered Management Accountant and work as the Finance Director of a large religious charity. I am no longer a parent of a current pupil, but all three of our children attended St. Joseph's School with the first starting in 1994 (St. Mary's School) and the last leaving in 2010. Tim has no business interests at St Joseph's School and is not a governor at any other School.

Fiona Catchpole ( Previous Governor)

I was appointed a non-Teaching Staff Governor on 1st September 2011 after Viv McDonald stepped down, and stayed until end of July 2015. I was on the Outreach Committee for the full four years. I have no relevant business or pecuniary interests, no other Governance roles elsewhere and, no material interests.

Mike Stokes (Previous Governor)

The Chair of Governors leads the Governing Body and is elected by the Governing Body from within its membership. Mike has been a Foundation Governor for 10 years, and is the current Chair Mike is a retired City Insurance Broker. Originally from West London, he is married to Rosemary and they have lived in Guildford for 40 years. They have seven children, five of whom attended St Joseph's. Two grandchildren currently attend. Rosemary has worked at the school as a Teaching Assistant and is now a volunteer helper. Mike has no Business interests with St Josephs and is not a Governor at any other School.

Margaret Powell ( Previous Governor)

I have been a Foundation Governor since 2009, appointed by the Bishop specifically to ensure that the Catholic character of the school is preserved and that the religious education curriculum is in accordance with the diocesan policy. My background was in the healthcare sector. I retired 10 years ago from a senior oncology post at the Royal Surrey County Hospital where I had worked for over 25 years. I am an active member of St Marys Church, Rydes Hill plus a few other local organisations where I work in a voluntary capacity. Both of my daughters attended St Josephs as well as 4 of my grandchildren so I have a strong desire to ensure that it remains the outstanding school it is for both its current and future pupils. Margaret has no business interests at St Joseph's School.
